In this post, Pen’s Rhythm Nation: What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye I talk about Marvin Gaye’s iconic album, What’s Going On. Originally released in 1971, it is absolutely one of the greatest albums of all time.
Although I heard this album growing up, it hits different as an adult. Especially because I have the record. Hearing this album as a grown woman and playing it on a turntable allowed me to see it as one of the most original albums ever.
What’s Going On takes you on a journey. With incredible lyrics and outstanding production, I am just in awe of this album. And unlike most music bloggers, I’m not going to try and break down the album with fancy language. I would rather just talk about it like a normal person with an opinion on music.

I understand why it has withstood the test of time. It’s just absolutely phenomenal. The focus of What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye documents pain & struggle, protecting our children, and serving God. At least that’s what I take from it. Honestly, I wish I could elaborate more but What’s Going On speaks for itself. It’s a must have album for any record collector.
