In this post, Pen’s Eye: Dallas Black Dance Academy Presents Espresso Nutcracker, I am going to introduce you to Dallas Black Dance Academy’s annual Christmas ballet. This year, 2022 marks the fifth annual Espresso Nutcracker.
As stated in the press release, “Espresso Nutcracker is a new twist on a holiday tradition. The performance is jazz-influenced by the music of Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite.
Espresso Nutcracker
Dallas Black Dance Academy Director Katricia Eaglin, assisted by academy ballet instructors, choreographed Espresso Nutcracker. She was inspired to use the traditional Tchaikovsky music along with tracks from Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite, selecting Ellington tracks that were still recognizable to the original work.
Ms. Eaglin added narration to the performance to unlock the mystery and magic of the storyline. Eaglin also added an African dance to the Land of Sweets Act that includes Spanish, Arabian, Chinese, and Russian dances in the original version.
The original Nutcracker Ballet, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is one of the most famous ballets in the world. It tells the story of young Clara’s magical journey on Christmas Eve.
Dallas Black Dance Academy Presents Espresso Nutcracker
Students from the academy’s Pre-Professional division perform all the youth roles in the production. Many dance academies usually bring in professionals to dance key Nutcracker roles, consequently eliminating the need for students. However Dallas Black Dance Academy students will dance all key parts, such as the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Snow Queen. DBDT professional dancers will dance the adult characters of the Mother, Father, and Drosselmeyer.”
I am going to see the performance on Saturday and I can’t wait! As a matter of fact, it’s been years since I have seen the full Nutcracker ballet. And to see it with all Black cast is going to be phenomenal! Stay tuned for the vlog!
The performance is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 7:00 PM in the Majestic Theatre, located at 1925 Elm Street, Dallas, TX. Additionally, Espresso Nutcracker is also available via live streaming and on-demand.
