As you all know, I launched Pennies & Pens in November 2020 at the height of the pandemic. I had always wanted to design clothes but never really pursued my dream. So when we went into quarantine, I knew I had to find something comfortable to wear.
I bought a few t-shirts but just couldn’t find one that was actually comfortable. So I decided to design my own collection. Since I’m vegan, I wanted to use organic cotton because it uses less water and is better for the environment.
The design process included multiple steps as I first started with research. I read several books on fashion design such as Fashionary’s The Fashion Business Manual and The Visual Dictionary of Fashion Design. These books were both phenomenal resources and I know I couldn’t have launched Pennies & Pens without them.
Next, I started designing the collection. I sketched my designs in a Fashionary sketchbook then I created the designs in Photoshop. From there, I work with a manufacturer who creates my blank T-shirts and then a printer to print my designs.
Since launching Pennies & Pens, I have been focusing on sales by participating in various Pop Up Shops. Now, I’m ready to increase brand awareness so I’m participating in various Fashion Weeks. Austin Fashion Week is in its 14th year and is the 5th largest fashion week concept in the US.
That said, I want to thank the Austin Fashion Week team for accepting Pennies & Pens. By giving us a platform to showcase our collection, Austin Fashion Week is supporting an independent, Black and woman owned business. It’s truly beautiful to see.
