Pen’s Rhythm Nation: Unboxing Monsta X’s The Dreaming

Dear Pennies & Pens,

On a recent trip to Target, I decided to pretend that I am balling out of control and purchase Monsta X’s newest album, The Dreaming. As y’all can see, this past week has been all about Monsta X…because it’s All About Luv. Haha Monbebes will understand my Auntie joke.

Anyway, I have been wanting The Dreaming since before it even dropped. You see, Monsta X released the first single One Day back in September. That’s when I learned they were releasing their second English album because a Monbebe mentioned it in the comments. From that moment on, I began to anticipate The Dreaming.

Once it was officially released, last month, I almost lost it. Man this album is soooo good!!! Like I couldn’t be more pleased with it. Every song is absolutely amazing!

Although I do wish they would’ve chosen Tied To Your Body, Blow Your Mind or The Dreaming as the second single as opposed to You Problem. I just feel like You Problem is so similar to BTS’ recent songs Butter and Permission To Dance which is why they keep being compared to BTS. If Monsta X really wants to differentiate themselves then they should release the more mature, edgier content they’re already known for in Korean but in English.

Of course this is just my opinion. And I do like the song, You Problem, I just think it’s the weakest song on The Dreaming and in some ways it doesn’t match the vibe of the rest of the album. Honestly, in general that’s why I want Kpop artists to get away from all the cutesy stuff.

The genre has become known for that and not in a positive way. You see here in the States, that’s what makes people dismiss Kpop. They don’t see or hear the artistic side, they just see/hear the catchy beats, bright styling and complicated choreography and think that’s all it is. People are really unaware that there’s real vocalists and rappers as well as producers in Kpop who are extremely talented.

So anyway, after my long rant, in the video below, I unbox and open my copy of The Dreaming. I purchased it at a local Target. And I must say it was such a proud Monbebe moment because the album was just sitting there on the shelf waiting for me to buy it. They had all four versions too! It’s a dope video with plenty of loud laughs. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments.

And there it is. de la Pen…All Pen Everything. With us, keeping it real never goes wrong.
