A Penny for Your Thoughts: The Realities of Being a Broke Black Girl in a Pandemic

Dear Pennies & Pens,

Two years ago, I started writing about my life as a Broke Black Girl. And get this shit…I’m still broke. Like two years later I still have a bank account that is just barely hanging on. Like bruh, I don’t get it. What am I doing wrong?

My therapist says that I have to change my mentality and stop acting as if I’m not good enough. I just can’t help it. It’s this feeling I can’t shake. It keeps chasing me no matter how hard I run.

It’s the pandemic outside. None of us asked for this. Yet here it is. And as we all know, life as a broke black girl became even worse in this pandemic. Now millennials like me who were already affected by the recession have to deal with this pandemic.

The gubmint claims that we can all go back to work now that there’s a vaccine but I could barely find a decent paying job with a college degree before the pandemic. Lol so what the fuck am I supposed to do now?

But, seriously, I could barely find a decent paying job even with a degree before the pandemic. I’ve literally had TWO paying jobs in the creative field. Lol what a joke. So why did I go and get a degree? Like Ye ain’t got no degree and this nigga a billionaire. I just want to be a thousandaire.

Hopefully, I’mma get a job today though. It would be a super regular job but hey it’ll pay my bills until I can get my shit together. I’ve actually had some serious business growth over the past year. I just need to keep going.

First, I reached over 100 orders this past August! I also signed a new client on retainer. That said, ISLP is truly growing. So right now, my main focus is to grow my business even more. But to do that, I need to raise startup capital.

I plan to use the capital that I raise to purchase inventory, participate in Pop Up Shops, run ad campaigns and develop new products. I’ve realized that raising capital and increasing sales are my priorities right now because it will lead to me making more money. Once I’m making more money, I’ll start to turn a profit and will finally be able to be comfortable.
