Dear Pennies & Pens,
Stacey Abrams is an Author, Lawyer, Politician and Voting Rights Activist. Born & raised in Georgia, she attended Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas and Yale Law School. Stacey has written a total of 10 books, 8 of which were published under the pseudonym Selena Montgomery. In fact, she’s a best selling Author as her romantic suspense novels have sold over 100,000 copies.
Stacey’s also done amazing things within her political career. As it states on her website, “Stacey Abrams founded the New Georgia Project, which submitted more than 200,000 registrations for voters of color between 2014 and 2016.
In 2010, Stacey became the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and the first African American to lead in the House of Representatives. As House Minority Leader, she has worked strategically to recruit, train, elect, and defend Democrats to prevent a Republican supermajority in the House, and has worked across the aisle on behalf of all Georgians.”
I am absolutely in awe of Stacey Abrams. She is truly an inspiration and a force to be reckoned with. I have been hearing of her name for a couple of years now but since I don’t live in Georgia, I’m not as familiar with her work. A few months ago, I watched an interview she did with Trevor Noah for the Daily Show and I was enthralled by her aura. Stacey has a way of commanding your attention and making you listen.
After watching the interview, I immediately went on Amazon and purchased “Lead from the Outside” and “Our Time is Now”. I wanted to read Stacey’s thoughts on civic engagement and politics because it’s something I want to learn more about. And I must admit, Lead from the Outside is seriously one of the best books, I’ve ever read.
It was so intelligent and poignant. There were many days when I could only read a chapter because each chapter was so thought provoking. When you read a “heavy” book, I recommend reading it spurts to allow your mind to process what you just read. This is definitely the best way to read Lead from the Outside.
Lead from the Outside gives you insight on how to conquer your fears, why you need a group of mentors, managing your money and finances as well as what Stacey calls Work-Life Jenga. It was truly an insightful read. My favorite part was the activities at the end of each chapter. These activities help you brainstorm and strategize your own dreams and goals.
Overall, Lead from the Outside is a phenomenal book. I highly recommend it. Since, it’s Women’s History Month, let’s support the work of living, breathing Black history by celebrating the work of Stacey Abrams. Check out Lead from the Outside and learn more about Stacey Abrams on her website.
And there it is. de la Pen…All Pen Everything. With us, keeping it real never goes wrong.
