Dear Pennies & Pens,
While soaking up everything the south has to offer during Summer in South’s first stop in Birmingham, AL, LoudPen & I enjoyed many incredible dining experiences. Not only did we encounter budget friendly prices at these location but the food was delicioso! That said, today, I present to you Summer in the South: The Best Eats in Birmingham.
The first eatery that must be mentioned is Post Office Pies located in Avondale, AL, just a few miles South of downtown Birmingham. It was the perfect late night stop after a full day of traveling.
PO Pies will surely strike you on entry with their baker preparing pizza dough in the front window, open brick oven, and the ability to design an authentic Italian pizza right at your fingertips.
If you are craving a fresh choice the margarita pizza is the way to go, topped with fresh basil leaves, cherry tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella. With every bite better than the last, Post Office Pies has has all the makings of the classic neighborhood pizza parlor.
You can never go wrong with a craving for fish & chips. So when Dixie Fish Company came to our attention we knew it was the perfect choice for dinner.
Of course they have much more to choose from than your classics, for example the shrimp and grits appetizer had us craving for an extra plate.
Our drink of choice for the evening was the No. 38 which was recommended by our waiter (who was highly accommodating as well as entertaining) was definitely a beer that paired nicely with our full plate of shrimp, oysters, catfish, and fries.
Dixie Fish company has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Their outdoor patio, which also included a bar, was very spacious and included an area for live music and entertainment.
Birmingham was an excellent place to begin the this Summer in the South series. We experienced the rich culture & history of Birmingham, fresh dining experiences, and met tons of people with that great southern charm.
And there it is. de la Pen…All Pen Everything. With us, keeping it real never goes wrong.
