Pen’s Eye: The Kinsey Collection at HMAAC

Dear Pennies & Pens,

This past weekend, my sister came to visit me in Houston. We decided to check out the Museum District here in Houston because we both love art. Our first stop was to see The Kinsey Collection at the Houston Museum of African-American Culture.

The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey – Where Art & History Intersect is a national touring exhibit of authentic and rare art, artifacts, books, documents and manuscripts that tell the often untold story of African American achievement and contribution. The Kinsey Collection has been touring since 2007 and Houston is the last stop for the exhibition.

For those that don’t know much about Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, they are married couple and they’ve been married for 45 years. Together they’ve collected iconic pieces of African American artwork and artifacts. They’ve also raised millions for many different organizations and programs including their alma mater Florida A&M University.

The Kinsey Collection will be on view at HMAAC until October 26, 2014. I would highly recommend that you check it out! Especially, if you’re an art lover, African-American, or if you don’t know much about African-American history.

The museum doesn’t charge an admission fee so you have the opportunity to see historic artwork & artifacts for free! How can you beat that? I’ll admit, I didn’t know about the exhibit until we got to the museum. But it was amazing! I learned so much and the artwork and historical artifacts included in the exhibition are phenomenal!

The Kinsey Collection includes pieces like a photograph of a Union Soldier from 1864, “The Boss” by Bisa Butler, and “Boy’s Head” by James Lesesne Wells. The artwork and artifacts are accompanied by stories that tell you the history of the item. The exhibition is not only beautiful but educational.
