Dear Pennies & Pens,
To say that I am a fan of romantic comedies is an understatement. I am OBSESSED with romantic comedies. Most of the time, it’s all I watch. So today, I wanted to share a few of my favorite romantic comedies. These movies are classic not just because they were made some time ago but because they each deliver amazing performances, have great story lines, and they are so entertaining. Without further adieu, check out the list of classic romantic comedies below!
- Jersey Girl – On the cover of the movie it states, “A Cinderella Story with Big Hair.” That’s actually the best way to describe this movie. Starring Jamie Gertz and Dylan McDermott this movie is amazing. Jamie Gertz plays Toby and Dylan McDermott plays Sal. Toby is just a simple Jersey Girl who dreams of living the life of a city girl, and one day while visiting a Mercedes-Benz dealership, she meets Sal, a successful businessman. The movie then tells the story of how they fall in love. At first you think they are very different but as the story develops, you find that this is not the case. There’s not much info on this movie online, but it’s super dope and one you should check out. Buy it here: Jersey Girl
- Mahogany – I have no idea how I am supposed to sum up this movie in one paragraph. There are so many amazing and iconic elements in this film. Starring Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams, this is one that is impossible to get tired of watching. I mean it’s so ahead of its time as far as the story line telling the story of an aspiring Black Fashion Designer and Political Hopeful falling in love. Tracy Chapman (Diana Ross) and Brian Walker (Billy Dee Williams) seem as different as night and day but like the characters from Jersey Girl, this really isn’t the case. I love this movie because you learn that “success is nothing without someone to share it with”, as Billy states in the movie. Not to mention the amazing clothes. Everything Diana Ross wears is EVERYTHING. In this movie, you laugh, cry, and learn. Purchase it here: Mahogany
- Pillow Talk – I absolutely adore this movie! I have been brainstorming ways to do a remake of this film, but it’s so perfect, I don’t even know if I want to touch it. This movie stars Doris Day and Rock Hudson. In the movie, Jane Morrow (Doris Day) and Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) share a “party line” — a phone line that connects to two households. Jane and Brad start fighting when sharing the party line because Brad is constantly tying up the lines by calling women and singing to them. Upon meeting Jane at a club, Brad creates a fake persona of Rex Stetson and he and Jane begin seeing each other. It is during this time that they fall in love and this is where things get interesting. Like Mahogany, Pillow Talk features some awesome fashion both with Doris fabulous dresses and Rock’s tailored suits. Check it out here: Pillow Talk
- Love Actually – I watch this movie every Christmas! It’s one of my favorite Christmas movies. Love Actually is a British film and it features several different stories of love. Young love, unrequited love, strained love, and new love are the various stages of love that the film showcases through the characters. I like this movie because not one scene is out of place and it feels so real. This movie makes you feel like the actors weren’t acting but simply playing themselves. Since this movie features so many stories that are weaved together, I’m not going to bore you by summarizing the whole thing. But I highly recommend you check it out or watch it again if you’ve already seen it. Get it here: Love Actually
- Love Jones – Last but not least is Love Jones starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate. This movie shows a young Black couple as they fall in love. A cool fun fact about this movie is that two of the poems Nia’s character Nina performs were written by Sonia Sanchez. In the film, Nina (Nia Long) has just broken up with her boyfriend when she meets Darius (Larenz Tate). Despite this fact, the two meet and fall in love. It’s a great movie that features some awesome dialog and acting. It’s a 90s classic and one you must see. Find it here: Love Jones
