Dear Pennies & Pens,
Some exciting news has just reached my inbox. Gallery House founder Belinda Chun and artist, Stephen Ibbott have unveiled Ibbott’s highly anticipated 3 news works from his still life series. These new works have been in demand since Ibbott began his exploration of this genre over a year ago.
Ibbott is an internationally acclaimed painter whose artistic inclination can be traced back to his great-great-great uncle whom was Canada’s pre-eminent portrait painter from the late 19thC–Robert Harris, he famously painted “The Fathers of Confederation” which hung in the Parliament building. Ibbott has shown in blue chip galleries and art fairs across the USA, Canada and Europe.
The highly anticipated works feature iconic images of beauty like Jessica Rabbit, as well as music legends The Beatles, and The Evil Queen from Snow White. I love the pieces because they have flair and personality. The juxtaposition of classic sculptures next to modern day pop culture icons is cool and refreshing. I can appreciate each piece for its use of color and creativity.
In his own words, Stephen Ibbott describes the series as follows: “Most of the things I represent are themselves representations (posters, statuettes, figurines, etc.) – and which are things one could easily buy on Ebay or see on Google. They are cultural objects from throughout time: Ancient busts, modern bobble heads, Pre-Raphaelite wallpaper, Neo-classical paintings, exhibition posters, modern technology and so on.
My hope is to create colourful, optimistic paintings that re-assert the old (pre-Postmodern) idea of originality and uniqueness even if through borrowed means. I also aim to create subtle narratives in the paintings, much as I have done all along since my abstract days. Although they occasionally do stray or even get a little political, most often I like to paint about my favorite theme: love and relationships today in the dawn of the digital age.”
Gallery House (who collaborated with Stephen Ibbott to release this series) is a unique space serving primarily as a management site then a commercial gallery. Gallery House partners with gallery dealers, museums, and special projects and is currently in over 8 countries and growing. For more information, check out their website: galleryhouse.ca.
