Dear Pennies & Pens,
As you all hopefully know, I’m currently living in Houston, TX. If you didn’t check the post out here. Prior to Houston I had been living in New York for five years so obviously Houston has big shoes to fill as far as events. I mean while in NYC, I went to some of the most exclusive events like New York Fashion Week and The Affordable Art Fair NYC.
Upon moving to Houston a friend of mine told me about the HoustonPress which is a news and entertainment weekly that has an online and print edition. After visiting the website, I signed up for the email newsletter. It was there that I learned about the Artopia event. As stated on the website, “Artopia is an evening of culture, fashion, art, music and food. Entertainment includes live music, fashion shows, dance & theatrical performances and works from local artists. ”
Artopia was definitely a great way to kick off my Houston experience. The venue — Winter Street Studios is an art/event space that is absolutely huge. Though I was a bit scared of where it was located (it was behind railroad tracks and at night this looked scary to a female by herself in a new town) the space was really cool. There were hundreds of people in attendance at the event. There was also artwork on the walls, food to nibble on, music performances, and fashion shows.
Though everything could be overwhelming at times, the event was fresh. I enjoyed all the bands I heard and I definitely loved the artwork. Also the food was really good. There were vendors from local restaurants providing food samples. My homegirl and fellow writer, Cherise Luter was also at the event covering for HoustonPress, check out her event review which includes commentary on both the art & fashion here: Fashion, Art Merge Beautifully at Artopia.
So far my Houston life is off to a cool start. Stay tuned for more.
