Press Pen: Laura Siegel Fall/Winter 2013 Show Review

Dear Pennies & Pens,

At last I am finishing up the last of my #NYFW posts. Funny enough, Laura Siegel was actually my last #NYFW event of the season. However, the Fall/Winter 2013 season marked Laura’s fashion week debut.

According to the press materials, “The Laura Siegel Fall/Winter 2013 theme is adaptation. Laura looked at how animals survived in the wilderness, and in particular, how the Grizzly adapted and evolved into the polar bear.  References were pulled from their environments and survival techniques.  The polar bear hunting for fish is where the burgundy-blood colour was drawn from, and midnight forest, from the grizzly bear’s home.

Siegel is always designing with one concept in mind – how clothing is a home for the body.  Soft jersey linings, baby alpaca, washed silks, all together with hand-developed prints.  She specializes in working with ancient garment making techniques that allow for textured and dimensional pieces and block printing, embroidery, knitwear, bandhani, hand-dye work, etc, are a few of the major crafts that were worked with this season.”

Upon reviewing the press materials and images from the show, the inspiration of the collection is evident. The collection is very earthy, the prints are intricate and unique, and the colors remind me of fall. There were things that I loved about this collection and things I didn’t care for. For instance, I love the earthy chic color palette but I’m not sure about the prints. I think the design of the prints is cool but I’m not sure where the pieces could be worn to.

The collection as a whole flows very nicely. And overall, it is very unique. With Laura’s array of experience, I know that she’ll be a success. Check her out here: laurasiegelcollection.com.
