Dear Pennies & Pens,
I’m so excited to be writing about TILLYandWILLIAM because they are a fresh new brand that features both womenswear and menswear. So something for both my Pennies & Pens! TILLYandWILLIAM is a fashion design company based in New York. The brand functions on a philosophy of transformability and unisexuality, with a focus on comfort and conscious production.
At the heart of the company are friends and roommates Jessica Lapidos and Thomas Barranca who have assumed the roles of Tilly and William, respectively. Tilly is the physical engineer, the designer and the creative architect. William is the creative collaborator, the abstract designer, and a generator of ideas.
The duo conceived the concept in 2009 while working together at the University of Delaware’s fashion magazine [UDress] where Lapidos served as the Editor-in-Chief and Barranca as the Men’s Style Editor. After solidifying their ideas into action, Lapidos would go on to win “Most Promising Designer” of her 2010 Apparel Design class using the concept of the brand as her collection inspiration. Upon graduation, the two moved to New York together where Lapidos went on to serve as an online Fashion Editor, and Barranca laid groundwork on his first novel. While pursuing separate endeavors Tilly and William continued to develop and create designs for TILLYandWILLIAM and its premier collection.
For Fall/Winter 2013, TILLYandWILLIAM presented a collection that was full of beautiful, crisp colors and captivating silhouettes. Most of my favorite pieces came from womenswear such as black dress with a streak of purple fabric or another dress that was mostly black but featured mustard, salmon, and purple. As far as menswear, I fell in love with the ponchos. These pieces were cool and masculine.
A major highlight of the show was there was a dance performance during the show. One of the female models came down the runway but paused at the end, then another male model came to join her and together they executed a truly unique dance routine. I loved it and I think it added more excitement to the show. Also, they demonstrated how the clothes can be worn in many different ways by both sexes. Overall, the show was excellent.
