Press Pen: Rubin Singer Show Review

Dear Pennies,

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending Rubin Singer’s Spring/Summer 2011 show. I didn’t get a chance to snap pictures on my blackberry but I just received pictures from Rubin’s publicist and I’m happy to report that they included one of my favorite outfits. Now onto the show review.

The show was held at an off-site location (meaning not at Lincoln Center) in midtown. I loved that it was an off-site show because it allowed for exclusivity and privacy. Ā Also, all attendees had assigned seats with our names on them so all you had to do was find your name and you had your seat. Ā The collection featured only six colors grey, navy blue, black, white, gold, and yellow. Ā I really like it when designers stick to a simple color palette because it makes the collection more united. Rubin Singer definitely did this.

The collection began with an all white outfit that had a 3/4 length top and long skinny pants. Then there was a white dress with a V shaped print. This dress was actually done in several different variations, one was white with grey V shaped print, the other was white with navy blue, and the last was white with black. I love dresses in different variations because if I love a dress, I want it in every color possible because I simply cannot get enough.

The collection also featured a gold two piece outfit that had a sheer button up top and a pencil skirt. Next there was a navy dress made of navy sequins that was above the knee. I also found myself loving a grey one-shoulder dress on which the one-shoulder expanded out giving it the strong shoulder look. The next few ensembles featured lovely color contrasts. The first dress was grey with a yellow belt and *gasp* yellow gloves! The yellow gloves gave the outfit (you guessed it, my fave Kay Thompson word) pizzazz! There was also a navy pants outfit that had yellow painted lines on it, and the inside of the jacket was yellow. This outfit was a lovely mixture of navy blue and yellow, two colors I haven’t seen together in quite sometime.

Overall, I give the collection an A plus because, it is the most wearable collection I’ve seen since attending fashion week. I love the avant-garde and artistic fashion but let’s face it, sometimes you just need a well-made dress that has an interesting design but isn’t over the top. Rubin Singer seems to be trying to steal my heart and take my loyalty away from DKNY and Gucci which I recently decided are my two favorite brands. To say an emerging designer’s work rivals such brands is a big deal but I seriously racked my brain for how to buy every piece in his collection. If you’ve noticed I haven’t said that about any designer on this blog. In essence, make sure you check out Rubin’s work on his website! http://www.rubinsinger.com/
